What We Grow and Sell

Seedlings and Produce, Grown to Survive

Everything Alworawa sells has been raised and tested on the same ground it needs to survive on afterward: Rusinga's volcanic soils, its lake-edge humidity, its long dry spells. We would rather sell you fewer, sturdier seedlings than a nursery full of stock that looks good on the day of sale and struggles the week after planting.

Grafted Fruit Tree Seedlings

Mango and avocado varieties suited to Rusinga's climate, with other fruiting species added as demand allows.

Grafting joins two plants into one: the root system of a hardy, locally adapted rootstock, and the upper growth of a proven, high-quality fruiting variety. The rootstock does what local roots do best: draw water and nutrients from Rusinga's soil, and shrug off the pests and stresses a foreign rootstock might struggle with. The grafted top does what the rootstock alone cannot: fruit sooner than a tree grown from seed, and fruit true to the parent variety, harvest after harvest, rather than the unpredictable mix of characteristics a seedling grown straight from a pip or stone would produce. We currently graft mango and avocado varieties suited to Rusinga's climate, with other fruiting species added as demand and rootstock supply allow. Pricing runs KES 250 to 500 per seedling, depending on species, size, and the age of the graft. An older, more established graft costs more, because it has already cleared the riskiest months of establishment. Every grafted seedling leaves the nursery with planting depth, watering, and early-care guidance specific to that variety.

Native and Drought-Resistant Tree Seedlings

Moringa, Grevillea, Melia (locally known as mukau), and hardy Acacia built to survive island dry seasons.

These are the seedlings behind Alworawa's restoration work: indigenous and drought-hardy species selected for one quality above all others, they survive. Species such as Moringa, Grevillea, Melia (locally known as mukau), and hardy Acacia varieties are propagated at the nursery because they establish with minimal watering, tolerate Rusinga's poorer soils, and go on to do real ecological work once established: stabilising the ground, offering shade, and in several cases producing a useful yield of their own, whether that's Moringa leaves for food and fodder or timber species for future building material. These are the trees for boundary planting, windbreaks, reforestation of bare or eroded ground, and agroforestry systems that mix trees with food crops on the same plot. Pricing runs KES 100 to 500, depending on species and seedling size. As with our grafted stock, we follow up after planting, because a native seedling sold and then left to fend for itself in its first dry season has a far lower chance of surviving than one a nursery actually stands behind.

Fresh Farm Produce

Chemical-free sweet potatoes, cassava, and leafy greens grown with organic composting methods.

Alworawa Farm grows food crops for direct sale, among them sweet potatoes, cassava, and leafy greens, with the exact mix shifting through the season as different crops come into harvest. Everything is grown without synthetic chemical inputs, using the same composting and companion-planting methods behind our nursery work. We sell directly to households buying for their own kitchen, and to hospitality and food-service buyers who want a supply chain short enough to trace back to one farm on one island.

Land and Farm Partnerships

Shared cropping arrangements and farm-design consulting for idle or degraded acreage.

For landowners, cooperatives, schools, and institutions sitting on idle or degraded land, we partner directly rather than simply selling seedlings and stepping back. That can mean a shared cropping arrangement on land that would otherwise sit unused, or full farm-design consulting: species selection, layout, irrigation, and soil planning, built around the same techniques we've already proven on our own acreage. We would rather walk a new plot through its first two seasons with the people who own it than hand over a seedling list and wish them luck.

Farm Visits and Learning Tours

Walking the grafting benches, composting hub, herbal beds, and food plots with fellow farmers and groups.

We host students, researchers, school groups, and fellow farmers for hands-on visits to the nursery and farm, walking the grafting benches, the composting hub, the herbal beds, and the food plots, and talking through what's working, what's failed, and why. For institutions studying agroforestry, climate-smart agriculture, or community-led land restoration in the Lake Victoria basin, a visit here is a chance to see the techniques under a working farm's actual conditions, not a demonstration built for show.
