Why We Exist
We believe Rusinga does not need solutions imposed from outside. It needs practical solutions that are rooted in the island itself—solutions that restore the soil, bring back trees, use water wisely, and help farmers produce more from the land they already depend on.

Addressing Severe Land Degradation & Building Community Food Security
Rusinga Island faces severe and continuous land degradation, which has resulted in low crop production and biodiversity loss. This problem is further worsened by limited conservation knowledge and a lack of practical alternatives to increase food production.
As you may know, this community lies in the rain shadow, despite being surrounded by one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world. The harsh annual droughts, especially from June to September and January to March, together with disappointing and unreliable rains, have continued to cause serious damages.
We have seen our people depend on piecemeal solutions such as relief food. It is not strange to see families lose their crops and livestock to drought. It is paradoxical that this community is surrounded by freshwater lakes but struggles with food production and environmental degradation.
ALWORAWA provides tested and approved grafted fruit seedlings, native tree seedlings, herbs and potted plants. On top of this, ALWORAWA trains its clients and follows up with them to ensure that the products distributed thrive and survive. We walk with our clients until we see success.
We strongly believe in a greener and more productive community. We believe it is possible to address today's environmental challenges while increasing food production for more than 6,000 households within and without the island.

A Working Farm & Nursery
Day to day, that means grafting and raising fruit tree seedlings, propagating native and drought-resistant species from seed and cutting, growing food crops for direct sale, and composting everything the farm produces so nothing leaves as waste.
We sell directly to our diverse clients like you. We train you and follow up to ensure our objectives on restoration and food production is sustained.
Low-Input & Island-Tested
We believe that a technique that only works with expensive imported inputs is not realistic to smallholder households in our communities. That is why we focus on practical approaches such as hand grafting, companion planting with indigenous herbs, and composting with biochar to improve soil health.
We also believe in testing everything on our own ground, under our own dry seasons, before recommending it to another farmer. Advice that hasn't survived a real drought is just a guess.
Four Goals. One Farm.
Every part of Alworawa—the nursery, the food plots, the herbal beds, the composting hub—is built to serve four goals that depend on each other.
Restore the Land
Rusinga Island has lost over 60% of its biodiversity due to extreme annual drought and land degradation. Alworawa's nursery exists to reverse that cycle directly, propagating indigenous and drought-resistant species that have been tested and verified to survive in this environment. Every seedling we produce and follow up on is a specific act of restoration: roots holding soil against heavy rains, a canopy shading the ground, and habitat returning.
Grow More Food, More Reliably
Rainfall on Rusinga Island is becoming increasingly unpredictable, with dry spells arriving at different times and lasting longer. Alworawa Farm demonstrates that food can still be grown under these conditions using practical, climate-smart methods. These include drought-resistant crops, composting to improve soil health, and protective planting patterns that conserve moisture. Our goal is a reliable supply of food grown locally, close to and by the households that depend on it.
Pass On Skills and Techniques
A single farm, however well run, can only restore so much land. The real impact comes when practical techniques such as grafting, propagation, composting, water-wise planting and natural pest management reach more people. At Alworawa, we train community members, welcome farm visits, field studies and conversations with neighbours as opportunities to share what works. We demonstrate these methods on our own farm, where people can see, learn and try them for themselves. The goal is to help more households grow food, care for their land and build a greener, more productive Rusinga.
Build a Self-Sustaining Local Enterprise
Alworawa is built to sustain itself through itself and expand its services beyond Rusinga Island in the long run. We sell seedlings and farm produce directly at prices suited to the households and institutions we serve. Our aim is to build a farm that can support its own operations while helping the community grow food, restore the land and improve livelihoods. It is a long-term commitment to Rusinga, built on practical work, lasting relationships and results that matter beyond a single good season.
How We Operate Differently
Hand-Grafted On-Site for Local Roots
Grafting done by hand using rootstock and scion material selected for Rusinga conditions rather than imported wholesale.
Companion Botanical Pest Control
Threaded indigenous herbs manage pests through scent and natural predator habitats, without reaching first for synthetic chemicals.
Tested on Our Own Ground
Every technique is tested under our own dry seasons before recommending it to another farm. Advice that hasn't survived a real drought is just a guess.
Rooted in Local Partnerships & Community Customers
Our customers and partners span the island and beyond: smallholder households buying seedlings for a home orchard or reforestation; schools, churches, and community-based organizations establishing shade, food, and income on institutional land; partners including Lakeside Innovators and Youth4Climate, working alongside us to reach more of the community; hospitality and food-service buyers sourcing fresh, chemical-free produce; and researchers and students from institutions studying sustainable farming and agroforestry in the Lake Victoria basin, who visit the farm to see these techniques applied under real conditions rather than in a controlled trial plot.
